RIVER GIANTS SANCTUARY
River Giants is currently being set up to help monster fish become re-homed in excellent environments. Sadly over the years aquatic shops have been selling certain types of fish to the customer without thinking of the outcome for the fish. Some of these types of river giants are only 2-5 cm when sold in the shop, but the owners do not realize that these can grow up to 10 times the size they were when they bought the fish. It is becoming more and more regular that these fish are needing to be re-homed as they have outgrown their aquarium. There has been so many case of this, so much so that now public aquariums are refusing to take them as they are full up and cannot take anymore. Where do these fish go now?
River Giants are here for this reason! We have many years of experience as hobbyist of these monster fish. With large ponds we give the fish a permenant home, re-creating their natural habbitat in the wild.
We are currently working towards opening a sanctuary for these magnificent creatures. A sanctuary not only set up for rehoming these large freshwater giants, but one that will represent their home environments. Completed with tropical environments that will make you feel as if your walking alongside a lake in Asia, South America and other beautiful countries where these fish originate from. There will also be a research centre set up for our educational programes we will be operating for disadvantaged children, young adults and the local community as well schools, colleges and universities. We also intend to have a small childrens play area and cafeteria so you can enjoy refreshments whilst relaxing in this wonderful environment whilst visiting the sanctuary to see these almost mythical fish.
Our service is free, all fish are transported humanely and are given a good home for life with us. we do not adopt the fish out! When fish are re-homed, they will be posted on this site, so the owner can see the fish in their new home and know they are safe and well.
As this service is quite costly, any donations to River Giants would be welcome. So If you have any fish items to donate i.e ( pipe, food, tanks, pumps, pond plants, pond lining, nets, or anything you may have that can be used for freshwater fish. please contact us through email or phone or on our contact us page.
We are supporters of The big Fish Campaign!
The aim of the Big Fish Campaign is to raise awareness about the problem of aquarium fish that grow larger than the vast majority of home aquaria can accommodate, and to promote responsible buying and selling of these larger species. The campaign will be focusing on a positive approach, including: raising awareness throughout the hobby and aquatic trade about the extent of the problemdispelling the myth that fish only grow to a size relative to the tank size!
Asking retailers to sell larger fish responsibly by providing information on realistic adult sizes of these species. It is not the aim of the campaign to ban certain fish from sale, or push for restrictive licensing – quite the opposite in fact: it is hoped that a more responsible attitude from fishkeepers, retailers and wholesalers/importers will help to prevent the need for future legislation.
